University Campus Art and Memorials

Role and Scope of the University Campus Art and Memorials Committee

The University Campus Art and Memorials Committee is a university-wide committee that reviews and acts on proposals for the development and installation of campus art and memorials. Proposals for campus art and memorials must come from university offices and departments or through the State of Ohio's Percent for Art Program. University Campus Art and Memorials Committee members also serve on Art Selection Advisory Committees for the State of Ohio's Percent for Art Program. The Committee is appointed by the Executive Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Public Art and Memorials are provided to:

  • enrich the experience of an individual viewer
  • enhance the aesthetic nature of the campus
  • honor/memorialize an individual(s) or event(s)

Two Types of Proposals Requiring Committee Review

State of Ohio Funded Art: Ohio Percent for Art Program

Ohio's Percent for Art legislation, which became effective July 1, 1990, provides funds for the acquisition, commissioning, and installation of works of art for new or renovated public buildings with state appropriations of more than $4 million. The Ohio Percent for Art Program is the primary vehicle the university has for building a public art collection through commission and purchase funded by the Percent for Art Program.

University-Funded Commissioned Art

Works of art created that are permanent in nature and are uniquely created for a specific indoor or outdoor space on the campus are commissioned works of art.

Additional Proposals Requiring Committee Review

The Ohio State University Solar System Art Commission

The Ohio State University (OSU) seeks to commission an artist to create a conceptual design of a scaled, permanent astronomy display on its main Columbus campus. The design will be fabricated and installed by others. The selected artist will be teamed with an OSU-selected architectural/engineering partner through the duration of the project.
